Holiday Travel Advisory - Commodore Barry Bridge

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) is advising motorists traveling to the Jersey Shore via the Commodore Barry Bridge over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to expect lane restrictions and possible delays.

From Friday morning through Tuesday, only two lanes will be open eastbound to New Jersey. Due to an ongoing upgrade to the bridge’s moveable barrier system, the usual lane shift to accommodate increased traffic toward New Jersey will not be possible. The current configuration will remain fixed at three lanes westbound to Pennsylvania and two lanes eastbound to New Jersey throughout the holiday weekend.

Additionally, on Thursday night (7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Friday), there will be only one lane open in each direction to support work on the barrier system.

Motorists heading east from Pennsylvania should expect additional travel time during the first half of the holiday weekend, especially during peak hours.

Motorists are encouraged to:

  • Allow extra travel time
  • Check traffic conditions before departing
  • Consider alternate routes, such as the Walt Whitman or Ben Franklin Bridge, which will have four lanes available in the peak travel direction.

DRPA thanks motorists for their patience as it continues to improve the bridge’s infrastructure. The barrier upgrade is part of a $220 million multi-year project to paint and rehabilitate the Commodore Barry Bridge. This is a complex effort that requires careful planning and staging to keep traffic moving on a bridge with only five lanes. The limited number of lanes presents unique challenges as DRPA works to balance the needs of daily motorists with the demands of essential construction. Once complete, the project will enhance the bridge’s safety and reliability, benefiting the 41,000 vehicles that use it each day.
